Just as orthodontics repositions or aligns teeth, surgical orthodontics (also known as orthognathic surgery) aligns or corrects jaw irregularities to improve the patient's ability to chew, speak, and breath. It also can dramatically change a person's facial appearance, resulting in a more balanced profile and smile.
A combined orthodontic and orthognathic approach is utilized when braces alone cannot correct the malloclusion. This surgery is performed by an oral and maxillofacial surgeon on adult patients who are no longer growing. In other words, surgical orthodontics straightens your jaws. Moving the jaws also moves the teeth, so braces are always performed in conjunction with jaw correction. After surgery, your orthodontist will refine your new bite, ensuring your teeth are in their proper position for a healthy beautiful result.
